He coached Japan at the 1996 Summer Olympics. Nishino became the first coach at Gamba Osaka to have won four different titles—the AFC Champions League in 2008, the Emperor's Cup twice in 2008 and 2009 and the 2005 J-League titles as well as the J.League Cup twice in 1999 and 2007.
