Adams Township is a civil township of Hillsdale County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township population was 2,498.

  • History

    Adams Township, named for pioneer settler Henry P. Adams, was set off from Moscow Township in 1836, with Salmon Sharp as its first supervisor. Sharp became the first postmaster on May 4, 1837. The post office was discontinued on February 28, 1857, having been superseded by the larger village that had developed in North Adams.>

    Geography

    According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 36.1 square miles (93 km2), of which 35.7 square miles (92 km2) is land and 0.4 square miles (1.0 km2) (1.00%) is water.

    Demographics

    As of the census of 2000, there were 2,498 people, 941 households, and 706 families residing in the township. The population density was 69.9 per square mile (27.0/km²). There were 1,036 housing units at an average density of 29.0 per square mile (11.2/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 98.44% White, 0.52% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.12% from other races, and 0.40% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.28% of the population.

    There were 941 households out of which 32.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.7% were married couples living together, 6.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.9% were non-families. 19.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.03.

    In the township the population was spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 105.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 104.8 males.

    The median income for a household in the township was $42,708, and the median income for a family was $45,739. Males had a median income of $32,481 versus $24,509 for females. The per capita income for the township was $19,821. About 2.2% of families and 5.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.4% of those under age 18 and 7.7% of those age 65 or over.
