Career

Along with writers such as Barney Hoskyns and Richard Cook, Adam Sweeting is seen as one of the most important UK journalists of the 1980s. He started writing in 1979 and then quickly worked for many publications such as Beat Instrumental, Trouser Press, Australian magazine RAM and NME.

In 1980, he became a feature editor of Melody Maker. He also briefly collaborated with Sounds. In 1985, he stopped collaborating with the Melody Maker to work for The Guardian and also for Q. He did several interviews of influential musicians such as Kate Bush, Neil Young, Tom Waits and Joni Mitchell. Sweeting has written over 800 articles for The Guardian, including many hundreds of obituaries. Since the 2000s, he has been publishing articles and interviews in The Times and The Independent on Sunday.

Sweeting signed as a partner for a TV production company VTVC that got programs broadcast on Channel 4.

He is also the author of several books including Cover Versions – Singing Other People's Songs published in 2004 on Pimlico and Simple Minds published on Sidgwick & Jackson in 1999.
