History
Academy was started in 1988 by Duane Shaw, who established a strong foundation for Academy based on values, relationship, and service. In 1994 Academy prospered through the end of the refinance boom. At the end of the 20th Century, Academy had 19 branch offices across the country and was licensed to originate loans in 4 states.
In 2007 Academy prevailed through the subprime meltdown. In 2009 Academy’s leadership succession plan was implemented and Adam Kessler became President. In 2010 Academy Mortgage became the #1 Independent Purchase Lender in the United States as ranked by CoreLogic. In 2012 Academy participated in its first Service Expedition, held in Secanquin, Guatemala.
In 2014 Academy acquired the assets of Republic Mortgage, expanding to 200 branches and 2,100 employees nationwide. In 2016 Adam Kessler was named CEO and James McPherson was named President of Academy. Currently Academy has more than 220 Branch locations and 2,416 employees nationwide.
Acquisitions
In December 2014 Academy Mortgage acquired the assets of Republic Mortgage. Republic Mortgage was founded in 1983 by Scott Leishman in Salt Lake City, Utah. Kevin Haycock manages the Merger and Acquisition department.

Academy Foundation for the future
In 2011 Academy Mortgage created the Academy "Foundation for the Future." These initiatives give their employees, partners, and vendors the chance to participate in rendering service, labor, and financial assistance to disadvantaged families and communities. They are focused on providing a hand-up versus a hand-out to those who are striving to better themselves, their families, and their communities. The Academy Foundation for the Future is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax-deductible. The Foundation supplies financial resources, materials, and labor to disadvantaged individuals, families, and communities in need of assistance in the areas of; infrastructure, education, and housing. Their vision is a world where everyone has the opportunity to obtain sustainable homeownership.
