History and Objectives

Martin Allgöwer and like-minded researchers founded Academia Raetica on June 6, 2006. It opened its offices in Davos in July 2009. Markus Furrer acts as the first president of Academia Raetica.

For more than hundred years, research institutions have been emerging in Graubünden. Among them are the Physikalisch-Meteorologisches Observatorium Davos (1907, Carl Dorno), the Swiss National Park (1914, Steiven Brunies), the Schweizerisches Forschungsinstitut für Hochgebirgsklima und Medizin (1922, Florian Buol), the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF (1936), the AO Foundation (1958, Martin Allgöwer), and the Swiss Institute for Allergy and Asthma Research SIAF (1905).

In recent years, the value of collaborations between research institutions, clinics, and universities has become apparent. The establishment of Academia Raetica provides a common base for the interaction with public authorities, the public, and universities on a national and international level. The aim is to strengthen the regional expansion of high-quality research and teaching.

In October 2012, the Canton of Graubünden established the legal basis for the future development of research and education by unanimously endorsing the Law on Universities and Research (Gesetz über Hochschulen und Forschung). On October 1, 2014, the Canton of Graubünden issued a performance mandate to Academia Raetica for the establishment of the Graduate School Graubünden. This subsidiary of Academia Raetica supports the young scientists in Graubünden. Already in 2013, Academia Raetica signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) and the University of Zurich. The purpose of this cooperation is to establish the Graubünden based research activities firmly within the national university and research scene.
