Aber Llwchwr was appointed a Position of Special Scientific Interest in Wales (SoDdGA or SSSI) on 1 January 1972 in an attempt to conserve the area. The estuary has an area of 5851.16 hectares. Natural Resources Wales is the body that is responsible for the area.

Type of position

The position is remarkable for its wildlife, containing species of birds, butterflys, lizards, reptiles and insects. Wildlife sites usually require the continuation and development of an environment such as a traditional grazing land.

General

SSSIs include a wide variety of habitats such as small fens, bogs, riverside meadows, sand dunes, woodlands and uplands. It is an area of land that is protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 as it includes wildlife or geographical features or landforms of particular importance.
