History

Abellio Deutschland was formed by the Essen public transit company in association with the British investment company Star Capital Partners, which owned 75% of Abellio. In 2008, both parent companies sold their shares to NedRailways, the international expansion arm of Nederlandse Spoorwegen. All NedRailways companies are now branded as Abellio.

Rail

Abellio Deutschland operates several regional railway lines in North Rhine-Westphalia, notably the line between Essen and Siegen / Iserlohn along the Ruhr and Lenne rivers. Abellio operates a number of Stadler FLIRT trainsets and has a maintenance center in Hagen. Moreover, Abellio operates S-Bahn services in North Rhine-Westphalia using Alstom Coradia LINT diesel multiple units and S-Bahn services in Eastern Germany using Bombardier Talent 2 trainsets. Since December 2016, Abellio operates three additional lines in North Rhine-Westphalia using the Oberhausen–Arnhem railway.

Bus

Abellio Deutschland owns among others the Verkehrsbetriebe Mittelhessen which operates several regional bus lines in Hesse.
