Lakew was born in Gondar, Ethiopia.

She moved to the U.S when she was 13, and went to high school in Dallas, Texas. Lakew sings in Amharic and English.

Lakew has been nominated for Best Traditional Female Artist for Africa at the 2016 Kora All-Africa Music Awards to be held on 20 March 2016.
