Career

McGowan began his career with Morecambe and made his professional debut on 20 April 2013 in a 2–0 defeat against Torquay United, becoming the club's youngest ever debutant.

McGowan came on as a substitute for Chris McCready on 1 January 2014 Vs York City FC after impressing manager Jim Bentley.

In an interview Bentley sees McGowan as a prospect for the future of the club and the next big thing to come out of the lower leagues. McGowan was described as a Strong, Robust Attack minded player who loves a challenge. McGowan was the youngest player to play in the Football League in the 2012–2013 season at 16 Years and 6 Months old.

McGowan played Vs Bury in a 0–0 draw in April.

On 19 May 2014 McGowan signed a new two-year deal at the Globe Arena and was described as one of the "Fab Four" as 3 others also signed 2 year extensions on this night. In a post interview McGowan was named Fearless by manager Bentley

On 28 March 2015, McGowan scored his first professional career goal in an away game at Exeter City. The game finished 1–1 and the 18-year-old was named Man of The Match.

On 29 September McGowan was named as Man of the Match in a League 2 fixture vs Notts County. He also picked up a Man of the Match award in a 3–1 home win against Crawley Town on 20 October 2015.

On 4 January 2016 McGowan signed a new 2 and a half year contract to keep him at the club until July 2018. The young Liverpudlian committed his future to the club after fending off interest that Championship and Premier League clubs were tracking the fullback. Speaking to The Visitor, McGowan stated it was a "no-brainier" to sign the new deal and also said that the interest surrounding the highly rated youngster never bothered him. "I just want to play games at 3 pm on a Saturday, that's it. Some young lads get carried away with gossip, I'm just looking to play each week and do the best I can to help my team to where we want to be."
