History

AOAart.cn (Autistic or Artistic? Art) is an organisation created by the Beijing Rehabilitation Association of Autistic Children, that allows autistic individuals to express their originality and personality through art. The society aims to raise awareness of autism whilst supporting the individuals in their realization of self-value and to become part of a community with their own power, thus regaining pride and dignity for autistic people.

The Aim of AOAart

1. To regain pride and dignity for autistic people. 2. To support autistic people in their realization of self-value and to return to the community with their own power. 3. Through social interaction with autistic people, to stimulate humanistic reflection and to rethink about our human condition and values.

"Communication without Language" Project (24 April 2013 – 11thAugust)

>>>1st stop: London Date: 31 May 2013 onwards The painting created by autistic children in China and recreated in the UK were taken to different locations in London and document different people hold the painting, to show love and support to these children. The aim is to get a total of 24 hours of video footage. The project was started in London and is expanding worldwide including China, Japan and Korea.

2 April 2008 the first annual "World Autism Awareness Day", we held our first exhibition "Love Beneath an Azure Sky" featuring paintings by autistic children. Up to now, we have successfully held five exhibitions and have raised broad public awareness on autism. This national exhibition is the first one addresses the autistic children in China.

April 2008 AOAart's website was set up.

2009 AOAart's BBS was set up for better discussions on autistic art tutoring. AoAart is short for "Autistic or Artistic ". As the name suggests, it reminds people to rethink how much we really know about people with autistic and their abilities.

1–6 April 2009 AOAart held the 2nd Exhibition "Love Beneath an Azure Sky" featuring paintings by autistic children.

April 2010 in order to promote the independence and self-improvement of autistics, the first brand of autistics:AOAart was established. We experimentally applied works of the autistics to cups and T-shirts. The income will put into feedback for autistic children's treatments.

2 April 2010 AOAart held the 3rd Exhibition "Love Beneath an Azure Sky" featuring paintings by autistic children.

2–16 April 2011 AOAart held the 4th Exhibition "Love Beneath an Azure Sky" featuring paintings by autistic children.

16 September 2011 AOAart was invited by "Art Beijing "to sign the professional art gallery. This was a memorial moment as a symbol of autistics works of art recognized by the society.

31 March 2012 AOAart Studio was found in 798 Art District. This is the first professional art institution addresses the autistics. The studio's responsibility is to make advertisements, hold exhibitions, provide guidance and treatments and volunteer training services. This assures the boost of morale of autistics and high quality of services.

April 2012the fifth"Love Beneath an Azure Sky" firstly introduced external autistic works of art into China. We also invited many famous internal artists to examine the autistic art jointly, they rediscovered the precious value of the existence of autistic art.

1 June 2012 AOAart Studio partnered with 798 Art District held "International Children Art Week", which enabled the autistic children to blend in the society by being identified.

20 June 2012 AOAart was invited by Hoffer-launay Education Center in Paris, France to display fresco of autistic paintings. Several French media came to report live. This was an international cooperation focused on disabled children's art activities. This event contributes to popularizing the works of autistic children throughout the world.

2 April-7 April 2013 AOAart held the 6th Exhibition "Love Beneath an Azure Sky" featuring paintings by autistic children.

September–December 2013 A collaboration between AOAart and 52 Hz the autistic art exhibition"The innocents' monologue-return to dignity"is helding in Beijing. Artworks by autistic children are being exhibited around the seven high schools and AOAart's original goods are also being sold. The total income will put into feedback for autistic children's treatments.

  • 52 Hz is a High School Alliance,launched by seven elite High Schools in Beijing,which is delicated to supporting Autistic people.
  • 25 September 2013 Shakuhachi concert YangXiao,who is the first generation staff of AOAart,with her husband JiaLin,a Shakuhachi player(Shakuhachi is a Japanese end-blown flute)held a small-scale Shakuhachi concert. The autistic children and all of us had a wonderful night with the music,candle,aroma,teaism.

    27 September 2013 Rubber Duck Sketch Competition Rubber Duck is coming to Beijing Design Week in September. AOAart's autistic children were drawing the Duck as guests of Beijing Design Week. The famous singer Allen Lin was also invited to the event with children.

    4 November 2013 A collaboration between AOAart and "Star Bunny Love" A Charity Bazaar was held at IZZUE's shop in Beijing. Halloween Cloaks and Hand-painted T-shirts were created by the autistic children and volunteers~Also the autistic children brought their handmade cookies for people.

  • "Star Bunny Love" is a fashion brand ,launched by famous model Chenbige ,supporting the autistic children.
  • 6 November 2013 A workshop between AOAart and Intel A workshop is held at AOAart atelier in Beijing. We welcome Intel General Manager and Intel staff to The volunteers made canvas clothes, and autistic children, Intel staff were drawing graffiti on the clothes. Intel also gave the children pastels as a present.

    14 December 2013 two painting charity auctions Auction NO.1: Dec.14th 7:00pm 1725culture transmission& life experiencing venue, chaoyang district, Beijing. Organized by 10 families, the charity auction sold 17 paintings, including original paintings of the AOAart Studio, children paintings of the 10 volunteering families and other products deriving from those paintings. And it is delighting to know that all the auctions come to a charitable fund of over 60 thousands yuan(US$9930).

    Auction NO.2: Dec.14th evening 2013 International Wedding Fashion Week There was also a touching charity auction held successfully during the 2013 International Wedding Fashion Week. In this auction 3 paintings painted by the children were sold and raised over 20 thousands yuan(US$3310). On that day, one of the children of the AOAart Studio, Wang Bocheng, also attended the evening reception, giving the audience a marvelous experience by playing the accordion.

    Classes Treating courses: AOAart.cn offers 5 types of weekly classes. Each term of the class lasts for 3 months. Children who have finished 2 terms of any course will be told to pause their treatment for a period of time. 1. Interest Developing class (2:00-4:00PM Sat.) The aim of this course is to let children find their passion in various materials through different activities. By opening their minds, this course offers a great chance to develop their creativity and imagination, which will help them to pursue a future of professions in visual art. 2. Music&Painting class (7:00-8:30PM Fri.) During Music&Painting class, there will be music played while the children paint. It gives them a time to express their feeling for the music with the brush in their hands. Eventually, it will help relax and soothing their emotions. The course also includes basic vocal training. 3. General Art treatment (2:00-4:00PM Fri.) The purpose of this course is to deal with the children's behavioral and mental problems. While taking the class, the children build trust in the relationship with their teacher and develop social skills. The class offers a variety of art training. Painting, making models with clay, and basic dance class are included. 4. Training for Professional Art (2:00-4:00PM Thu.) The class is designed for children who have the potential or interest in pursuing a professional art. Professional artists give specific directions for every single individuals in this class. The course makes it easier for the children on their ways chasing their artist dreams. 5. Handicrafts making (2:00-4:00PM Wed.) Highly finished and exquisitely crafted handicrafts are made during this class. It's for both adult and minor autistics. Their works will be sold, which make this course close to the daily life.

    9 October – 13 October ASIA PARAART TOKYO 2013 AOAart was invited to take part in ASIA PARAART TOKYO 2013, displayed Paintings and Writings by disable artists in Asian countries. There was submitted the work of 600 from abroad and 400 from Japan. After being screened, 222 works are on display in the hall. Among them, 5 paintings by artists of AOAart.cn.
