Critical reception

Buzz McClain of allmovie gave the movie 3.5 of 5 stars stating: "Taut and compelling, A Glimpse of Hell is a based-on-fact story that doesn't feel like it was drawn entirely from dry depositions and courtroom testimony." The movie when first shown, scored a 3.3 household rating and drew 2.7 million viewers. This was enough to make A Glimpse of Hell the most-watched program in FX's seven-year history, at the time. There is some minor inaccuracy in several screen shots of battleships: They all are of BB-63, as given by the "63" in the stem writing. However, BB-63 is the USS Missouri; the correct hull number for the USS Iowa is BB-61, as shown by the "61" on the caps of the various characters.
