Reception

Allmusic awarded the album 4½ stars with its review by Scott Yanow stating, "Friedman's playing (which shows the strong influence of modern classical music, particularly in its chords) rewards repeated listenings".

Down Beat critic Pete Welding had this to say about A Day in the City in his April 26, 1962 review: "Friedman is a pianist of extraordinary ingenuity and originality. Friedman will strike most listeners as a spiritual cohort of Bill Evans, for their approaches are markedly similar."
