The 51st Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards was held on March 10, 2016, to recognize achievement in professional theatre productions staged in and around Cape Town. The ceremony was held at the Baxter Theatre Centre and was directed by Thando Doni. Lynelle Kenned and Africa Melane hosted the ceremony.

Eligibility

Shows that opened in and around Cape Town during the 2015 season were eligible for consideration. For a production to be eligible, a run of a minimum of eight performances over a period of three weeks at the same venue is required.

Non-competitive awards

John Kani received the Lifetime Achievement Award. The Award for Innovation in Theatre was presented to the Zabalaza Theatre Festival. A special award named A Heart for the Arts was presented to Irma Albers, whose active involvement in the Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards came to an end with the 2015 season after two decades.

In Memoriam

During the tribute, the slide show was accompanied by Anele Mhlahlo on violin and Naresh Chauhan on sitar.

Performances

There were performances at the awards ceremony by Lingua Franca, a group of singers led by Pedro Kruger, Die Nuwe Graskoue Trappers, the Music van de Caab Heritage Development Project with Zenobia Kloppers and Tribal Echo, Sibonelo Dance Company and Bovim Ballet.
