This year, a total of forty nominations from fifteen different countries competed for the award across ten categories. Considered the most prominent event in the international television industry, the International Emmy Awards recognizes excellence in television produced outside of the United States, as well as US Primetime programs produced in languages other than English.

Ten programming and performance Emmys and two Special Awards were presented by a cast of celebrity presenters including Damian Lewis, Christina Ricci, Tony Goldwyn and Birgitte Hjort Sørensen.

Ceremony

The nominees for the 44th International Emmys were announced on September 26, 2016 by International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. This year Brazil had the highest numbers of nominations, seven in total, followed by United Kingdom, with six. A total of 40 nominees from 15 countries competed in 10 categories of the International Emmy Awards, which honors excellence in television programming outside the United States. The ceremony was hosted by The Good Wife star Alan Cumming.

British and German TV productions each won three International Emmys, including acting honors for Dustin Hoffman and Christiane Paul. Hoffman received the award for best performance by an actor for the BBC One TV movie Roald Dahl's Esio Trot, Germany’s Paul garnered the best actress award for her performance in Untern Radar. The British series Hoff the Record, with David Hasselhoff won the comedy category, and the TV series Capital won the best telefilm or miniseries.

Germany took the Emmy for best drama series by Deutschland 83, about story of an East German spy who infiltrates the West German army to steal NATO secrets. The documentary award went to War of Lies directed by Matthias Bittner.

Brazil's Verdades Secretas won as best telenovela. The mini-series Francisco, El Jesuita, jointly produced by Anima Films and Telemundo, won the International Emmy for best non-English language US primetime program. The award for arts programming went to Japan's The Man Who Shot Hiroshima . Allt för Sverige of Sweden received the award for non-scripted entertainment.

American executive producer Shonda Rhimes received the Emmy Founders Award for its "global impact on television." And the Danish Maria Rørbye Rønn, CEO of Danmarks Radio was awarded the Emmy Directorate Award.
International Emmy World Television Festival

The 2016 International Emmy World Television Festival took place November 20 and 21, at the Sofitel New York Hotel. Highlights included an Opening Kick-Off Cocktail Party sponsored by JCS International at the United Nations and a Brunch & Panel sponsored by Prodigy Pictures' Jay Firestone.
Entry Deadline
The 2016 International Emmy Awards Competition was opened in December 10, 2015 with a deadline for submissions of February 18, 2016. Any non-US organisation or individual may submit a programme, and co-productions with the US are eligible if aired initially outside of the States, or if the broadcast dates were within a few days of each other. All eligible submissions are entered into the competition and then judged by television professionals from around the world.
Entries and Judging
There are three rounds of judging. The first round takes place in the spring; the semi-final round takes place in the summer - hosted by Member companies; and the finals take place in September. Nominations are announced in October. Four nominees are selected in each category and winners are revealed at the International Emmy Awards Gala, held in November.
