The 2017 USL season will be the seventh season of the USL. The league has been granted provisional Division II status by the USSF It is organized by the United Soccer Leagues.

On September 16, 2015, the league announced that they would expand by adding Reno 1868 FC; the team will be affiliated with San Jose Earthquakes.

On October 25, 2016 the league announced its first expansion team, the Tampa Bay Rowdies, who are moving to the league from the NASL. The same day it was announced that the league would also add the Ottawa Fury from the NASL.

The new ownership of Arizona United SC rebranded the team as Phoenix Rising FC on November 28, 2016.

On December 9, 2016, the Montreal Impact announced that it would fold its reserve team FC Montreal in favor of affiliating with Ottawa Fury FC.

Competition Format

The season will start on March 25 and will end on October 15. The top eight finishers in each conference will qualify for the playoffs.
