The teams for this season were: Cockburn Cougars, East Perth Eagles, Geraldton Buccaneers, Goldfields Giants, Joondalup Wolves, Kalamunda Eastern Suns, Lakeside Lightning, Mandurah Magic, Perry Lakes Hawks, Perth Redbacks, Rockingham Flames, South West Slammers, Stirling Senators and Willetton Tigers.
For the 2016 season, a number of teams changed venues. The Stirling Senators moved into the newly renovated Warwick Stadium, and the Perth Redbacks returned to the Belmont Oasis Leisure Centre after a trial year at Curtin University in 2015. Also, due to renovations to the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre, the Mandurah Magic hosted all of their 2016 games out of Rockingham's home venue at Mike Barnett Sports Complex.
All-Star Game
The 2016 SBL All-Star Game took place at the WA Basketball Centre on Monday 6 June, with all proceeds going to Lifeline WA for suicide prevention.

***Thomas Korf was selected after Perry Lakes Hawks guard Bryton Hobbs (starter) was ruled out with a wrist injury, and initial replacement Trian Iliadis of the Joondalup Wolves was ruled out with a hamstring injury.
^Kyle Lindbergh was selected after teammate Cody Ellis (starter) was ruled out due to injury.

Three-Point Shootout
During half-time of the All-Star Game, a three-point shootout was undertaken between four players.
Matt Honey was the eventual winner after making 11 of a possible 15 in the final round to win just ahead of Thomas Korf.
