The 2016 Kilkenny Senior Hurling Championship is the 122nd staging of the Kilkenny Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Kilkenny County Board in 1887. The championship began on 24 September 2016 and ended in October 2016.

Relegation & Promotion in 2015

Eleven of the twelve teams from the 2015 championship are participating in the top tier of Kilkenny hurling in 2016.

Bennettsbridge, who defeated St. Patrick's by 1-16 to 1-14 in a replayed final of the intermediate championship in 2015, availed of their right to automatic promotion to the senior championship.

Similarly, St. Martin's defeated Carrickshock by 2-13 to 0-13 in the 2015 senior relegation play-off, and so Carrickshock were relegated to the intermediate grade for 2016.

First round

Four of the twelve teams receive byes into the quarter finals. The remaining eight teams play in four matches with the winners progressing into the quarter finals.

Quarter-finals

The four teams who received byes in the first round play the four winners from the first round.
