The 2016–17 Rangers F.C. season will be the club's first season back in the Scottish top-flight following their promotion from the Scottish Championship at the end of the 2015–16 season. It will be Rangers' 136th season of competitive football and they will compete for the Scottish Premiership, Scottish League Cup and the Scottish Cup.

June

2 June - Rangers were drawn into Group F in the Scottish League Cup against Motherwell, Annan Athletic, East Stirlingshire and Stranraer. Rangers began their 2016/17 season away to Motherwell on 16 July.

8 June - James Tavernier won the SPFL Goal of the Season Award for his goal against Peterhead in the Petrofac Training Cup Final at Hampden Park during the 2015/16 season.

10 June - Dean Shiels left the club following the expiration of his contract.

Also on 10 June - Rangers Academy Under 20's Manager Ian Durrant left the club.

16 June - Rangers confirmed they will host Burnley in a pre-season friendly at Ibrox Stadium on Saturday, 30 July.

17 June - Rangers will kick-off their return to Scotland’s top flight against Hamilton Accies at Ibrox on August 6 after the fixtures for the 2016/17 Season were announced today.

Also on 17 June - Clint Hill signed for the club on a one-year contract.

20 June - Club Captain Lee Wallace extended his contract with the club until May 2019.

22 June - Cammy Bell left the club by mutual consent.

23 June - Niko Kranjčar has become Mark Warburton's sixth signing ahead of the 2016/17 Season.

4 June - Rangers secured the services of goalkeeper Matt Gilks on a two-year deal following his departure from Burnley.

29 June - Rangers signed Lee Hodson for an undisclosed fee on a three-year contract.

Also on 29 June - Rangers announced they have sold more than 40,000 season tickets.

July

15 July - Goalkeeper Liam Kelly agreed a loan move to Livingston until January 2017.

Also on 15 July - Rangers won the 2016 Scottish FA Championship Fair Play Award for last season’s campaign.

18 July - Tom Walsh joined Alex Rae’s St Mirren on-loan until January.

19 July - Rangers signed Joe Dodoo from Leicester City for an undisclosed fee on a four-year contract.

26 July - Ryan Hardie joined St Mirren on-loan until January.

31 July - Rangers were drawn at home against Peterhead in the Second Round of the Scottish League Cup which was played on 9 August.

August

5 August - Jordan Thompson joined Raith Rovers on-loan until January.

10 August - Rangers were drawn at home to Queen of the South in the Quarter Final of the Scottish League Cup with the match being played on 20 September.

18 August - Robbie Crawford left the club after the club and player mutually agreed to the termination of his contract.

20 August - Rangers signed Joe Garner from Preston North End for a reported initial fee of £1.5 million + add-ons worth up to another £300,000 on a three-year contract.

24 August - Rangers agreed a commercial deal with Bon Accord Life who were the new official life insurance partner of the club.

31 August - Philippe Senderos signed for the club on a one-year contract.

Also on 31 August - Andy Murdoch left the club.

September

5 September - Former player Max Murray died at the age of 80.

6 September - Utilita Energy, was confirmed as official energy partner for the 2016/17 season.

19 September - Joey Barton was suspended by the club and would not return to Ibrox or Murray Park for a period of three weeks.

22 September - Rangers were drawn against Old Firm rivals Celtic in the Semi Final of the Scottish League Cup at Hampden Park with the match being played on 23 October.

October

9 October - Joey Barton was informed that his suspension by the Club had been extended by one week.

23 October - Rangers were knocked out the Scottish League Cup after losing 1-0 to Celtic in the Semi Final.

28 October - Rangers International Football Club plc published its annual report for the year ending June 30, 2016.

30 October - Former Rangers manager Jock Wallace was inducted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame.

November

2 November - Rangers prepared for the second half of the SPFL Premiership campaign by playing a friendly against RB Leipzig in Germany on Sunday 15 January 2017.

Also on 2 November - Joey Barton was told he would return to full-time training following the conclusion of a disciplinary procedure.

10 November - Rangers and Joey Barton agreed to terminate his contract with immediate effect.

16 November - Former player Daniel Prodan died from a heart attack, aged 44.

25 November - Rangers hosted their AGM at the Clyde Auditorium.

26 November - Former player David Provan died following a long illness.

28 November - Rangers were drawn at home to Motherwell in the Fourth Round of the Scottish Cup with the match being played on 21 January.

1 January - Ryan Hardie signed for Raith Rovers until the end of the season.

9 January - Rangers signed Emerson Hyndman on loan from A.F.C. Bournemouth until the end of the season.

12 January - Rangers signed Jon Toral on loan from Arsenal until the end of the season subject to international clearance.

Also on 12 January - Matt Crooks joined Scunthorpe United on loan until the end of the season.

18 January - Midfielders Fraser Aird and Tom Walsh left the club after their contracts were mutually terminated.

Also on 18 January - Rangers Hall of Fame member John Little died at the age of 86.

22 January - Rangers were drawn at home to Greenock Morton in the Fifth Round of the Scottish Cup with the match scheduled to be played on 12 February.

27 January - Rangers Hall of Fame member Billy Simpson died aged 87.

30 January - Goalkeeper Jak Alnwick signed for Rangers from Port Vale for a fee of £250,000 on a three and a half year deal.

31 January - Goalkeeper Matt Gilks joined Wigan Athletic on an 18-month contract for an undisclosed fee.

February

10 February - Rangers Manager Mark Warburton, Assistant Manager David Weir and Head of Recruitment Frank McParland left the club after Rangers accepted their resignations. Under-20s coach Graeme Murty would take interim charge of the team.

12 February - Rangers drew Dunfermline Athletic or Hamilton Academical at home in the Scottish Cup Quarter Final draw after beating Greenock Morton 2-1 at Ibrox. The tie was scheduled to be played over the weekend of 4/5 March.

15 February - It was confirmed that Rangers would face Hamilton Academical in the Quarter Final of the Scottish Cup on Saturday 4 March at Ibrox after Hamilton beat Dunfermline Athletic 3-0 on penalties.

20 February - It was confirmed that former Rangers player Roger Hynd died from cancer at the weekend.
