The 2016–17 Northern League season is the 119th in the history of Northern Football League, a football competition in England.

Division One

Division One consisted of 22 clubs.

The following 3 clubs left Division One before the season -

  • Bedlington Terriers – relegated to Division Two
  • Durham City – relegated to Division Two
  • Norton & Stockton Ancients – relegated to Division Two
  • The following 3 clubs joined Division One before the season -

  • Chester-le-Street Town – promoted from Division Two
  • Ryhope Colliery Welfare – promoted from Division Two
  • South Shields – promoted from Division Two
  • Two teams – Bishop Auckland and South Shields – applied for promotion to step 4 for the 2017–18 season.

    Promotion criteria

    To be promoted at the end of the season a team must:

    1. Have applied to be considered for promotion by 30 November 2016
    2. Pass a ground grading examination by 31 March 2017
    3. Finish the season in a position higher than that of any other team also achieving criteria 1 and 2
    4. Finish the season in one of the top three positions

    The following two teams have achieved criterion one:

  • Bishop Auckland
  • South Shields
  • Division Two

  • Birtley Town – relegated to Northern Football Alliance
  • Chester-le-Street Town – promoted to Division One

  • The following 5 clubs joined Division Two before the season -

  • Bedlington Terriers – relegated from Division One
  • Blyth Town – promoted from Northern Football Alliance
  • Durham City – relegated from Division One
  • Norton & Stockton Ancients – relegated from Division One
  • Stockton Town – promoted from Wearside League
