After finishing the 2012 season in fifth position, Vasco da Gama aimed to win its fifth title of the Brazilian Série A. The club returned to compete in the 2013 Copa do Brasil, a competition which it won in 2011. The club could not play in the Copa Sudamericana due to fixture conflicts with the Copa do Brasil.
