On 13 October 2013 riots broke out in Moscow's southern Biryulyovo district after it was announced that Egor Shcherbakov, a 25-year-old man, was killed allegedly by a migrant who "might have come from Central Asia or the Caucasus" on 10 October. The footage of the man being stabbed was circulated in the news agenices. The previous day, some 40 people gathered to demand justice. The police announced a reward of 1 million rubles (~$30,975) for any information about the suspect.

The riots turned violent as the protesters, a "mixed crowd of nationalists and locals", attacked properties owned by immigrants.

On 14 October, the police arrested more than 1,200 migrant workers where the killer allegedly lived.

On 15 October, Orkhan Zeynalov, an Azerbaijani citizen, was arrested as a suspect for killing Egor Shcherbakov in Kolomna, not far from Moscow.
