The 2011–12 season was Gateshead's third consecutive season in the Conference National and their 14th at this level in total.

Gateshead also fielded a reserve side in The Central League for the second consecutive season and a newly formed under-19s team played in the Football Conference Youth Alliance.

  • 19 May 2011: Gateshead announce the signing of midfielder Micky Cummins following his release by Grimsby Town.
  • 31 May 2011: Gateshead announce the signing of defender Sam Rents from Crawley Town.
  • 7 June 2011: Gateshead announce the signing of defender Eddie Odhiambo and striker Yemi Odubade after their releases from Newport County and Stevenage respectively.
  • 9 July 2011: Gateshead begin pre-season with a 0–1 defeat by Huddersfield Town at Gateshead International Stadium. Former Gateshead striker Lee Novak scoring the only goal of the game.
  • 10 July 2011: Midfielder Ashley Winn joins Farnborough on a free transfer, after a successful trial.
  • 16 July 2011: Gateshead's pre-season friendly at home to Carlisle United was abandoned after 58 minutes due to torrential rain with the score at 2–0 to Gateshead.
  • 27 July 2011: Gateshead announce the signings of Chris Carruthers, Chris Moore, Ewan Moyes and Kyle Nix.
  • 13 August 2011: Gateshead win their opening league game of the season 3–2 away at Kidderminster Harriers, with goals from Jon Shaw, Micky Cummins and Kris Gate.
  • 16 August 2011: Gateshead top the league table after goals from Jon Shaw, Yemi Odubade and James Curtis secure a 3–0 home victory against Mansfield Town.
  • 24 August 2011: Goalkeeper Paul Farman is named in the England C squad for their game against India U23s on 6 September, but the match was postponed the following day.
  • 1 September 2011: Goalkeeper Paul Farman signs a contract extension until the end of the season, while striker Gary Mulligan signs a short-term deal until January.
  • 2 September 2011: Striker Jon Shaw named Blue Square Bet Premier Player of the Month after scoring in all six league games during August.
  • 8 September 2011: Gateshead announce the signing of goalkeeper Jak Alnwick on a one-month loan from Newcastle United.

  • 2 May 2012: Gateshead's under-19s side win the Football Conference Youth Alliance North Division after a 2–0 win against MMU Newcastle.
