Contents

Millwall won the tense final 1–0 thanks to a Paul Robinson goal from close-range towards the end of the first-half. The victory saw captain Robinson's team return to the Championship after a four-year absence, having failed to gain promotion in their previous five play-off campaigns.

Swindon Town's best goal-scoring opportunity came on 72 minutes when Charlie Austin was put through on goal but his shot was sent wide of the target after the ball bobbled on the turf at the moment Austin went to strike it.

Route to the final

Under League One play-off rules, the final was to be contested by the two teams which secured an aggregate victory over two-legged semi-finals, with the team that finished sixth in the league table (Huddersfield Town) having played third (Millwall), and fifth (Swindon Town) having played fourth (Charlton Athletic).
