The 2006 season was São Paulo's 77th season since club's existence. The club finished in a second position in Campeonato Paulista, only one point less of winners Santos. After became a continental and world champion, São Paulo made an disputed season, being deafeted by Internacional in a consecutive final with Brazilian teams, against Atlético Paranaense in previous edition. São Paulo lost by 2-1 in Morumbi and draw in 2-2 on away second leg. As the current champion of Copa Libertadores, São Paulo playing the Recopa Sudamericana versus Boca Juniors and was defeated with the same results of Copa Libertadores finals, 2-1 and 2-2, 4-3 on aggregate. Tricolor won the Campeonato Brasileiro after 15 years of previous title, in 1991, became a national champion for the fourth time, reaching the title in 36th round against Atlético Paranaense in Morumbi stadium with a draw in 1-1.
