Teams

A total of seventeen teams contested the championship, a reduction on the previous year as Kildare, Meath and Wicklow declined to take part.

Format

The 2006 championship was run on a provincial basis as usual. Each match was played as a single leg. If a match was drawn there was a replay. If that match ended in a draw a period of extra time was played, however, if both sides were still level at the end of extra time another replay took place.

All-Ireland Championship

Quarter-finals: (2 matches) The draw resulted in the Munster and Leinster runners-up playing each other while Galway entered the championship at this stage and played the Ulster champions. The two losing teams were eliminated from the championship at this stage while the two winners advanced to the next stage.

Semi-finals: (2 matches) The Munster and Leinster champions were given a bye to this stage and were seeded in different semi-finals. The two quarter-final winners were drawn to play them. Repeat games from earlier rounds were avoided. The two losing teams were eliminated from the championship at this stage while the two winners advanced to the next stage.

Final: (1 match) The two semi-final winners contested the All-Ireland final.
