Andy Roddick was the defending champion, but retired from his second round match because of a wrist injury.

Roger Federer won the title, defeating Rafael Nadal 2–6, 6–7(4–7), 7–6(7–5), 6–3, 6–1 in their first final against each other. It was the first of 21 tournament final matches between the pair. Nadal would not again lose a match from two sets ahead until the 2015 US Open.
