The 2004–05 Minnesota Timberwolves season was the team's 16th in the NBA. They came fourteen wins shy of tying the previous season, finishing 44–38 and missing the playoffs for the first time in nine seasons. During the season, it became clear that the Timberwolves were not the same team of years past. Head coach Flip Saunders was replaced midway through the season with team GM Kevin McHale, who took over for the rest of the season as head coach. Following the season, Latrell Sprewell retired after turning down an contact extension and Sam Cassell was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers.
