The 1989–90 Southern Football League season saw Dover Athletic win the Premier Division. However Dover cide were unable to get a promotion due to ground grading issues and a place in Football Conference was taken by Bath City. 4 bottom teams were relegated to the Southern and Midland divisions, while champions and runners-up of lower divisions get a places in the next Premier Division season.

The Premier Division featured five new clubs:

  • Chelmsford City (promoted from the Southern Division)
  • Weymouth (relegated from the Football Conference)
  • Atherstone United (promoted from the Midland Division)
  • Gravesend & Northfleet (promoted from the Southern Division)
  • Gloucester City (promoted from the Midland Division)
  • Midland Division

    The Midland Division featured five new clubs:

  • Leicester United (relegated from the Premier Division)
  • Redditch United (relegated from the Premier Division)
  • Bedworth United (relegated from the Premier Division)
  • Barry Town (transferred from the Welsh League)
  • Racing Club Warwick (promoted from the Midland Football Combination)
  • Southern Division

    The Southern Division featured four new clubs:

  • Fareham Town (relegated from the Premier Division)
  • Hythe Town (promoted from the Kent Football League)
  • Bashley (promoted from the Wessex League)
  • Yate Town (promoted from the Hellenic League)
