The 1988 New Zealand National Basketball League season was the seventh running of the competition. Following Palmerston North's last place finish in 1987, they were dropped from the league for a second time (the first time being in 1983 after finishing last in the 1982). They were subsequently replaced by 1987 Conference Basketball League (CBL) champions Waitemata, who returned to the league after a four-year hiatus. The Wellington Saints won the championship in 1988 to claim their fourth league title.
