The 1986–87 Northern Counties East Football League season was the 5th in the history of Northern Counties East Football League. The league consisted of 55 teams.

The division featured 19 clubs, with the following new teams:

  • Bridlington Town, promoted from NCEL Division One
  • Brigg Town, promoted from NCEL Division One
  • Harrogate Town, promoted from NCEL Division One
  • North Ferriby United, promoted from NCEL Division One

  • Worsbrough Bridge Miners Welfare, promoted from NCEL Division Three
  • Yorkshire Amateur, promoted from NCEL Division Three
  • Before the season, Stocksbridge Works F.C. merged with Oxley Park F.C. to form Stocksbridge Park Steels F.C.
