Teams

The following teams entered the tournament (and played at least one match):

Preliminary Round

Burkina Faso, Libya and Togo did not enter. A bye was therefore given to respectively Benin, Ethiopia and Senegal.

Guinea and Angola both went through to the next round.

First Round

Benin and Senegal did not enter. A bye was therefore given to respectively Guinea and Ivory Coast. Entrants in this round were Algeria, Cameroon, Egypt, Ethiopia, Morocco, Nigeria, Tunisia and Zimbabwe.

Quarterfinals

Ivory Coast entered the tournament.

Qualification to World Youth Championship

The two best performing teams qualified for the 1985 FIFA World Youth Championship.
