The 1985–86 Southern Football League season saw Welling United win the Premier Division and earn promotion to the Football Conference, whilst RS Southampton and Oldbury United left the league at the end of the season.

  • Grantham (transferred from the Northern Premier League)
  • Leamington (relegated from the Premier Division)
  • Mile Oak Rovers (promoted from the Midland Combination)

    The Southern Division featured three new clubs:

  • Corinthian
  • Hastings Town (who replaced the folded Hastings United)
