Equatorial Guinea advanced to the First Round, Benin withdrew.

Rwanda advanced to the First Round, Uganda withdrew.

Upper Volta advanced to the First Round, Gabon withdrew.

First round

Algeria advanced to the Second Round.

Cameroon advanced to the Second Round.

Ethiopia won on penalties, and so advanced to the Second Round.

Ghana advanced to the Second Round.

Egypt advanced to the Second Round.

Morocco advanced to the Second Round.

Tunisia advanced to the Second Round.

Zaire advanced to the Second Round.

Zambia advanced to the Second Round.

Guinea advanced to the Second Round, Equatorial Guinea withdrew.

Madagascar advanced to the Second Round, Tanzania withdrew. Upper Volta received a bye to the Second Round.
