  • March 12 - Nô Pintcha football (soccer) club established
  • July 5 - Cape Verde gained independence after 500 years of Portuguese rule of the 15 inhabited islands off of the coast of West Africa. At Praia, Portugal's Prime Minister Vasco Goncalves turning over power to National Assembly President Abilio Duarte. Later in the day, the assembly elected Aristides Pereira as President and Pedro Pires as Prime Minister.
  • The ban on music genres including tabanka, funaná and batuque were lifted in Praia and the island of Santiago
  • The island capital Porto Inglês changed its name to Vila do Maio, residents still calls it by the former name today
  • Newspaper Terra Nova founded, the first newspaper mainly served for the island
  • Santiago Maior changed its name to Pedra Badejo on Santiago Island
  • The site that was the Tarrafal prison handed over to Cape Verde, it would be used as a military base named Tarrafal for nearly two decated
