In the previous season, it was released in January for the first time, after the bowl games, but not in 1966 or 1967. Since the 1968 season, the final AP Poll has been released in January; it ranked only the top ten teams from 1962 through 1967.
Notre Dame received 41 of the 56 first-place votes; Michigan State received eight and Alabama seven.
