Final AP poll

The final AP Poll was released on December 7, at the end of the 1959 regular season, weeks before the major bowls.
Syracuse (10–0) received 134 of the 201 first-place votes; Mississippi (9–1) received 49, Wisconsin (7–2) fifteen,
LSU (8–1) six, Alabama (7–1–2) six, Georgia (9–1) two, Washington (9–1) two, and Illinois (5–3–1) one.

  • Prior to the 1975 season, the Big Ten and AAWU ("Big Five," later Pac-8) conferences allowed only one postseason participant each, for the Rose Bowl.
  • Notre Dame did not play in the postseason for 44 consecutive seasons (1925–1968).

    The final UPI Coaches Poll was released prior to the bowl games, on December 8.
    Syracuse received 31 of the 35 first-place votes; Mississippi received three and Washington one.
