Season 1908–09 was the 32nd Scottish football season in which Dumbarton competed at national level, entering the Scottish Football League for the 10th time and the Scottish Qualifying Cup for the seventh time.

Overview
Dumbarton competed in the Scottish Second Division for the third successive season and finished 4th with 25 points, 6 behind champions Abercorn.
Again qualification for the Scottish Cup proved fruitless, losing to Ayr Parkhouse in the third round of the Scottish Qualifying Cup.
Locally, the Dumbartonshire Cup continued to be played on a league basis. Following the 'league' stage, in a repeat of the previous year, Dumbarton and Renton reached the final, and yet again Dumbarton had to give second best to their rivals.
During the season 2 'friendly' matches were played, recording 1 win and 1 loss, scoring 3 goals and conceding 3.

Promotion/Relegation Election
Dumbarton together with Raith Rovers applied for promotion from the Second Division, but for the third year in succession, it was the bottom two First Division clubs - Morton and Partick Thistle - that maintained their' top flight' status in the end-of-season elections.
