The municipality of Ulvundeid was established on 1 January 1899 when it was split off from Øksendal municipality. The new municipality had an initial population of 462, making it one of the smallest municipalities in the county. The name was later changed to Ålvundeid. On 1 January 1960, both Ålvundeid and Øksendal municipalities were merged into the neighboring Sunndal Municipality. Prior to the merger, Ålvundeid had a population of 513.
