Plot

Gary Oldman looking afar while wearing a black coat, blue long sleeves, black necktie, and eyeglasses in a scene from the 2021 film, Crisis

The film revolves around three characters, all of whom are in some way or other linked to opioids. Claire (played by Evangeline Lilly), is a former addict, suspects foul play when her son dies from a drug overdose. At the same time, Dr. Tyrone Brower (played by Gary Oldman), who is a college professor who has a research team, is paid heavily to conduct research and test out a new drug. A giant pharmaceutical company does this funding. However, Dr. Brower finds himself in a crisis of conscience when he comes to know about the drug's devastating effects as the research progresses. Thirdly, audiences are also introduced to a character named Jake (played by Armie Hammer), who is an undercover DEA agent involved in the investigation of the drug lords at the Canadian border and determined to bring them down. The whole mission becomes a sort of personal stuff to Jake as he also has a sister who is addicted to oxycodone.

Review

Evangeline Lilly with a serious face while wearing black coat and gray hoodie in a scene from the 2021 crime thriller film, Crisis

While there is no denying that Crisis has some compelling shining moments, the film doesn't involve with its characters as it should, and there is no proper investment in any emotional stakes that look worthwhile. Clarie is an exception to this, so we can say that the film's emotional core lies with her. As a mother, she is so desperate to find answers for the events that led to her son’s death that she takes matters into her own hands. She does this because she has lost the trust in cops and doesn't believe cops care to find the answers she is looking for or want to know what exactly happened to her son. Despite all this, Clarie is also the most sympathetic character that the audience can relate with, even though it is here that the plot becomes more complicated than her surface-level revenge.

While watching Crisis, you can't miss how hard it tries to be like the 2000 filmTraffic. However, it fails in creating a similar setting with enough tension or high stakes. Also, note that story-wise, the film is unbelievably flat and static. Of course, there are many moving pieces, but none of them is good enough to thrill the audience. As a matter of fact, it would have been far better if Crisis concentrated on the examination of people whose life is in the clutches of the opioid epidemic instead of focusing on the thriller aspects of the film. However, Jarecki fails to do this and turns the film's focus to action scenes without formally addressing the people or the systems who are inexplicably affected by it.

Irrespective of Jarecki's well-meaning attempts, Crisis ends up being a superficial story because it is unwilling to dive deeper into what it's trying to convey. This gives the audience an impression that all the characters and the movie's storyline are kept at arm's length from them. After watching the movie, one could not help thinking that there could have been so much more drama and tension to the storyline, which the director did not adequately explore. Otherwise, like traffic, it would have made an enthralling watch.
