Édgar Osvaldo Barreto Cáceres (born 15 July 1984) is a Paraguayan footballer who plays for U.C. Sampdoria as a midfielder. He represented the Paraguay national team from 2004 to 2011.

Barreto is the brother of fellow Paraguayan goalkeeper Diego Barreto.
Club career

Barreto started his career with the club Cerro Porteño, debuting in the 2002 season. The following year arrived also debut in the Copa Libertadores. It is noticed by the scouts of the NEC, Dutch club, who in January 2004 to buy it. After excellent performances in Eredivisie, in the summer of 2007 was bought by Reggina, signing a four-year contract. Barreto played an integral part in keeping Reggina in Serie A at the end of the 2007–08 season, earning a reputation for scoring long range goals. In summer 2009, after Reggina moved to Serie B, he was sold to Atalanta. Skip first season in nerazzurro through injury, returning the last days, not being able to avoid the relegation of his club in Serie B. His excellent performances in Serie B afforded the interest Napoli during the January market. Contributing to the promotion of bergamaschi in Serie A, at the end of the season is placed in the "Top 11 serie B 2010/11".

On 31 August 2011, he moved to Palermo in 4-year contract for €5.3 million .
On 1 July 2015, Barreto signed a contract with U.C. Sampdoria.
International career

Barreto debuted for the Paraguay national football team in a friendly match against Costa Rica on 8 June 2004.

Barreto was part of the silver medal-winning Paraguayan 2004 Olympic football team. He also capped for the Paraguay U-20 squad at the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship. He played for Paraguay in Copa América 2007, FIFA World Cup 2006, FIFA World Cup 2010 and Copa América 2011.

On 5 August 2012, Barreto announced his international retirement from the Albirroja due to fatigue from intercontinental travelling for national team matches. He cited that the travelling takes away much energy as the Serie A championship is long and exhausting.
