Zona a traffico limitato (ZTL) is a restricted traffic area in Italy. There are around 200 schemes that are enforced with cameras, plus 100 low emission zones. They help protect historic city centres from excessive traffic, which would otherwise make the city less attractive. The low emission zones also help reduce pollution, particularly in the north Italian regions which have very high concentrations of fine particulates (PM10).

Information on the schemes is often not very clear, and drivers often enter the zones by accident, so it is important drivers visiting Italy inform themselves before travelling. The multilingual website www.urbanaccessregulations.eu can help those not speaking Italian to know where the ZTL are.
