Vacuum cleaner salesmen Homer Smith (Jimmy Durante) and Brewster Jones (Phil Silvers) offend technophobic Col. Dobson while trying to sell him a vacuum. Determined to make a sale, Homer pitches to a recruitment officer and inadvertently enlists himself and Brewster in the army. The two are attached to Dobsons cavalry unit, where they are assigned to sell Dobson on the value of tanks with the aid of Dobsons daughter, Bliss (Jane Wyman), and her fiance, Capt. Joe Radcliffe (Regis Toomey).
