William L. Backman (Class of 1973) is a member of the Northeastern University athletics Hall of Fame. Backman was inducted in 1993 for his accomplishments in crew. Backman was also the coach for the women's varsity at Radcliffe.

During his time at Northeastern Backman became the first ever two time captain. Backman helped lead the Huskies to victories in the Eastern Sprints during the 1972 and 1973 seasons along with competing in the Grand Challenge Cup and Henley Royal Regatta.

After graduation Backman tutored a member the 1976 Silver Medal winning women's crew team before taking over the women's varsity at Radcliffe.
