Profiles

Whitby School is an independent, co-educational private day school for students ages 18 months through eighth grade, located in Greenwich, Connecticut, United States. The school was founded in 1958 by Nancy McCormick Rambusch who founded American Montessori Society (AMS) in 1960. The founding of Whitby is credited with initiating a Montessori revival. It is accredited by both the American Montessori Society and the International Baccalaureate (IB).

It was named after the Whitby Abbey in Yorkshire, where a story tells of an Abbess who recognized the musical talents of a stable boy and brought him into their educational programs. In 1960, the school moved from rented rooms at Sacred Heart School to its own campus. The school, through the AMS, became the first certified Montessori teacher training program in the United States. Rambusch and the AMS promoted a modified Montessori approach that would facilitate transition of the young students to traditional American schools which led to a split from the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI).

The Head of School is Bryan Nixon. Whitby enrolls 440 students, taught by 87 faculty members, on a 25-acre (100,000 m2) campus in Greenwich, Connecticut.
