The Westhope–Coulter Border Crossing connects the towns of Westhope, North Dakota and Melita, Manitoba on the Canada–United States border. The town of Westhope, six miles south of this crossing, was established by the Great Northern Railway in 1903. The railroad ceased operations on this branch in the 1970s.
History
Border inspection services were first conducted at this crossing in 1931. The US first built a permanent inspection station at the border in 1937. That brick veneer roadside border station was replaced by a new building in the 1974, and that facility was replaced by a large modern border station using Recovery Act funds in 2011. Canada's Coulter border station, which was built in 1947, was replaced in 2013.
