The Western Switzerland Railways (French: Chemins de Fer de la Suisse Occidentale, SO) was a former Swiss rail company, formed in 1872 and absorbed into the Western Switzerland–Simplon Railway in 1881.
History
The Western Switzerland Railways Company was established on 1 January 1872 from the merger of three railways: the West Switzerland Company, the Lausanne–Fribourg–Bern Railway and the Franco–Swiss Company. In 1876 it made a number of network expansions. On 12 June 1876 the line from Murten to Lyss opened and on 25 August the line from Murten to Palézieux as well as the line from Payerne to Fribourg.
On 1 February 1877, the line from Yverdon-les-Bains to Payerne was opened. On 20 December 1876, it absorbed the Jougne–Eclépens Railway Company (JE), established in 1870. On 28 June 1881 the company merged with the Simplon Company (S) to create the Western Switzerland–Simplon Company (French: Suisse-Occidentale-Simplon, SOS).
