The Men's Flyweight Weightlifting Event (– 52 kg) is the lightest men's event at the weightlifting competition, limiting competitors to a maximum of 52 kilograms of body mass. Each weightlifter had three attempts for both the snatch and clean and jerk lifting methods. The total of the best successful lift of each method was used to determine the final rankings and medal winners.

Competition took place on July 29 in the 4,500 capacity Albert Gersten Pavilion.

Due to the 1984 Summer Olympics boycott, reigning World Champion Neno Terziyski was not competing. The two Chinese weightlifters who won medals were the first Chinese to compete in weightlifting since the 1936 Olympic games. As they both tied for first place, the winner was Zeng Guoqiang, as he weighed 0.1 kilograms less than Zhou. Mahmoud Tarha, who originally finished fourth, was later disqualified for testing positive for the banned substance nandrolone.
