History
The website originated from a Facebook page set up in 2009. The name is a reference to the game Chinese whispers.
The site gained notoriety when one of its articles regarding a stampede in a Lidl shop was mistaken by a German magazine as genuine.
In August 2015 Waterford Whispers received a cease and desist letter to take down a satirical article written about well-known Irish business magnate Denis O'Brien claiming that he was prosecuted for bribery in a parallel universe.
