Wan mokhtar ahmad top 6 facts

Tan Sri Haji Wan Mokhtar Ahmad was the Menteri Besar (Chief Minister) of the Malaysian state of Terengganu from 1974 to 1999. He held the seat of Cukai in the Terengganu State Legislative Assembly for the same period, as a member of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) in the Barisan Nasional coalition. He is Terengganu's longest-serving chief minister.

Wan Mokhtar was an ally of the similarly long-serving Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. In 1987 he was elected a national vice-president of UMNO, alongside Anwar Ibrahim, on Mahathir's ticket.

His tenure as Chief Minister and a state assemblyman came to an end at the 1999 election, when the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party took control of both the state assembly and Wan Mokhtar's seat in a landslide victory.

Wan Mokhtar's son, Wan Abdul Hakim, was elected to the Terengganu state assembly in 2008.
