His career coaching record at VMI was 3 wins, 0 losses, and 1 ties. This ranks him 25th at VMI in total wins and first at VMI in winning percentage. He was the son of banker, lawyer, soldier, politician, author, and railroad executive Walter H. Taylor, who was also an aide-de-camp to Robert E. Lee.

VMI did compete in one football game in 1871, but no records were kept on the coach. The one-game season was a 2-4 loss to Washington and Lee University.
